Both groups are generally considered as nomadic societies that travel from one place to another. Research has been complicated by the fact that the group appears to have no written records of its own.

Four distinct genetic clusters were identified in the study, and these match social groupings within the community. The only name approaching an all-encompassing self-description is Rom. There are colourful displays of Royal Crown Derby crockery, handed down from mother to daughter on her wedding day.

Talking back to elders is unacceptable. The trailers are not connected to water pipes, and the toilets, bathrooms and cooking facilities are in a small, unheated shed across the yard. Among different Traveller groupings, two dialects are spoken.

They have fair skin but some groupings look like Caucasians. When Traveller girls are growing up, they are only allowed to go out with other family members, and once married, her husband rules the roost.

However, the two groups are totally different from one another. They typically work in asphalting, spray-painting, laying linoleum, or as itinerant workers to earn their living. While both are nomadic peoples, the two societies have totally different origins, culture, language, and physical profile. These are the Gamin and Cant dialects. Over the centuries, several Gypsy societies arose and also developed their own distinct languages.
